The ISLA Refinery in Curaçao, operated by the state-owned company Refineria Isla Curaçao (ISLA), is a significant player in the global oil refining industry. Located in Willemstad, the capital city of Curaçao, the refinery plays a crucial role in the Caribbean’s energy sector.
The quality of the Willemstad harbor, the strategic location of Curaçao, and the safe political status of the island also lured Shell to establish an oil refinery and transshipment plant in the harbor in 1916. Today, the refinery is leased to the Venezuelan oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PdVSA), operating under the name of Refineria Isla S.A.
